Professor Rebecca White Shares Entrepreneurship Secrets

Passionate, innovative and opportunity are three words that come to mind when Professor Rebecca White thinks of entrepreneurs.

As the James W. Walter Distinguished Chair of Entrepreneurship and director of UT’s Entrepreneurship Center, White recognizes an increase in those wanting to start their own businesses, not just from mid-career professionals, but from UT students.

On Wednesday, Aug. 31, she’ll share some tips on being a successful entrepreneur on WTSP-Channel 10’s “Studio 10” at 10 a.m.

“I think most of our students are not expecting to work for one employer all of their life and a major in entrepreneurship prepares them to approach their career and life with an entrepreneurial mindset,” White said. “This can probably be attributed to the changing perspectives of the creative class who is redefining how we work, where we work, when we work, etc....and to the economic recession of the past several years.”

White said there are pros and cons to being an entrepreneur.

“You are your own boss so your future is in your own hands – not an employer who can terminate or change your position,” she said. “This is why many of our students want to be entrepreneurs – they have seen their parents lose jobs late in careers, and it has been painful.”

She notes risk as a con to entrepreneurship.

“Some folks love the challenge, but others are very uncomfortable with the notion of ambiguity and risk,” she said.

On “Studio 10” White will share five tips for navigating as an entrepreneur in the current market. One such tip is to assemble a team of people who can support and grow your business.

“You will need good financial, legal and marketing assistance,” White said. “A team that has a good diverse skill set is critical to success.”
