Sluss, who is studying both marketing and Spanish, was enrolled in Principles of Management (MGT 300), led by Ashley Salaiz, assistant professor, and Thom Pittz, associate professor. The course included both classroom learning and visits to several Madrid companies.

“I wanted to take this course to experience how businesses operated in another country, immerse myself in a completely new culture and tie both of my majors together,” said Sluss.

In all, 11 UT students traveled to Spain for the course. They toured historical landmarks, including Retiro Park, Toledo, Santiago Benabéu Stadium and Plaza Mayor.

They watched a Flamenco show and paid visits to companies including La Liga, Eviden and ING Bank to see how they operate and to learn about life in Spain.

Sluss said her favorite part was getting to experience the beauty the country has to offer, from the architecture to the culture and way of life, all while practicing her Spanish-speaking skills.

She was surprised by the relaxed way of life in Spain, as there is a heavy emphasis placed on a healthy work-life balance, and spending time with family and friends is prioritized.

“I will definitely take everything that I learned from my time in Spain and apply it to my future classes and career,” she said. “I learned a lot of valuable lessons and gained a lot of insight from the company visits that will help me greatly.”

To any student who might want to travel abroad, Sluss says to go for it, adding that there is much to learn from other ways of life, and you will learn a lot about yourself that will help you throughout your life and career.
