Final Performance in the Concert Artist Series Set for April 22

To close out the 2011-2012 Concert Artist Series, The University of Tampa will present “The Music of Olivier Messiaen” on Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. There will be a preconcert talk by Haig Mardirosian, dean of the College of Arts and Letters, at 1:15 p.m.

The concert is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Doors will open one hour before the concert. Parking is available on campus.

Faculty artists in the program include violinist Lei Liu, clarinetist Ted de Corso, cellist Lowell Adams, pianist Grigorios Zamparas, organist Ryan Hebert and soprano Hein Jung.

Universally considered the most important French composer since Debussy, the concert will include some of Messiaen’s early works, including: “Poèmes pour mi,” songs with poetry by the composer dedicated to his first wife; “L’Ascension,” an organ work from his first major collection; and “Quatuor pour la fin du temps,” a series of meditations he composed while in a concentration camp during World War II.
