Lifeguarding

Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies with the American Red Cross lifeguard training. Our courses are designed to arm you with the skills and knowledge to prepare you for a variety of scenarios in and around the water. With our lifeguard training, you will learn how quick response times and effective preparation are vital to being a lifeguard while also understanding the crucial elements in helping to prevent drownings and injuries.

In order to take this course, you must successfully complete a pre-course test at the beginning of the first day of the course.

This pre-course will include:

  • 300-yard swim (front crawl or breaststroke)
  • Brick dive (swim 20 yards, surface dive, pick up 10-pound brick and kick 20 yards back to wall holding brick with both hands in 1 minute, 40 seconds)
  • 2-minute tread using only legs (no use of arms)

Those who register will receive a seven-hour virtual training component followed by 20 hours of hands-on skills training at the Benson Alex Riseman Aquatic Center pool. Hands-on trainings are always completed in a 10:1 student to instructor ratio or better.

By earning this certification you will be qualified to work as a lifeguard at most aquatics facilities that accept the American Red Cross certification nationwide. Please note that it does not guarantee employment, and some facilities may require additional certifications or trainings such as waterfronts (beaches) or water parks.

Completion of this training is not connected to employment at the Benson Alex Riseman Aquatic Center. To become an aquatic center lifeguard, you will need to apply independently of this training.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Course is designed to provide certification renewal for those who are already currently certified as a lifeguard by the American Red Cross (or those whose certifications are within 30 days of expiration). The renewed certification is good for two years from the certification date.

Lifeguarding Instructor

As an LGI candidate, you will be expected to know the American Red Cross lifeguarding skills to the standard of the Red Cross. As such, you will be expected to complete a pre-course test, given during the first day of the course which will include the following skills:

  • Infant CPR (Primary assessment and two-rescuer CPR for an infant)
  • Entries and Approaches
  • Passive Submerged Rescue (Surface dive and victim rescue)
  • Extrication using a backboard
  • One Rescuer CPR (Primary assessment and two-rescuer CPR for an adult)

Throughout this course, you will learn how to translate that knowledge to future lifeguards by teaching to the standard and using the LGI manual. You will do this through four practice teaching assignments which will be given to you on the Monday prior to the start of the course in addition to a virtual copy of the LGI manual. It is expected that you have your own copy of the manual ready to go at the start of the course and in whatever format you prefer (iPad, tablet, printed copy, etc.) although most people prefer a printed copy.

LG/IT Review

The Lifeguarding Instructor/IT Review course is a one-day review of lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and First Aid skills along with several teaching opportunities. This course requires you to already have your lifeguarding instructor certification, and you must have taught at least one full course or two review courses in order to be eligible for LGI certification renewal.

Is your base-level lifeguard certification also in need of renewal?

Select the option for "add Lifeguarding base-level test for Lifeguarding Instructors (+$50)." This will allow you to also be evaluated for your lifeguarding base-level certification at the end of the review course.
