Wind Ensemble Teams up with Second Time Arounders for Concert May 3
The University of Tampa Wind Ensemble and special guest The Greater St. Petersburg Area Awesome, Original Second Time Arounders Marching Band will give a concert on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in Falk Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.
The Wind Ensemble will open the concert with “The Purple and Gold” by Anthony O’Toole, a contemporary take on the traditional Sousa march form. The band will also play works by Frank Ticheli and Boris Kozhevnikov.
The Second Time Arounders will then play a set of popular marching band tunes before combining with the Wind Ensemble to play “Lassus Trombone,” one of Henry Fillmore’s famous novelty tunes featuring trombone smears, as well as Fillmore’s “His Honor.”
The groundwork for this collaboration was laid two years ago, when a delegation from the Second Time Arounders came to observe a day of the UT Summer Band Camp for middle and high school students. At the end of the day, the band made a gift of $1,000 for scholarships to the next year’s camp to support music education.
“That $1,000 assisted six students to attend UT Band Camp in 2012,” said Jeffrey Traster, director of bands and music education at UT. The Second Time Arounders renewed their commitment in 2013, pledging $1,500. For more information about the scholarship, go to http://www.ut.edu/Content.aspx?id=20085.
The Wind Ensemble is an auditioned wind and percussion ensemble at UT with approximately 40 student members.
Members of the Second Time Arounders previously participated in a high school, college or military marching band and have carried that passion into their adult lives. The band’s members range in age from 18 to 85 and members come from all over Florida and the U.S. to participate.
