UT to Host Tournées French Film Festival Jan. 26-Feb. 25
The Tournées French Film Festival is once again coming to The University of Tampa, with screenings of six French-produced films from Jan. 26-Feb. 25. All screenings are free and open to the public, and will take place in either Falk Theatre, located at 428 W. Kennedy Blvd., or Reeves Theater, located on the second floor of the Vaughn Center. Each screening will feature a discussion with filmmakers, cultural critics, historians, artists and other experts.
The Tournées Film Festival is a program of the FACE (French-American Cultural Exchange) Foundation, in partnership with the French Embassy of the United States, which aims to bring French cinema to American college and university campuses.
According to organizer Aaron Walker, assistant professor in Department of Film, Animation and New Media, the films chosen for screening at UT engage with culturally important moments and intersections in French and global society, with an emphasis on films directed by women or that strongly feature women-led narratives.
The first film, La Belle Saison, for instance, is about the rise of feminism in France in the 1970s. Things to Come is written and directed by a strong, emerging French auteur, Mia Hanson-Love. As I Open My Eyes is the first feature directed by Tunisian filmmaker Leyla Bouzid. And the final film of the festival, Fatima, concerns the challenges of gender and integration in France.
