UT Students to Stage William Inge’s Picnic Oct. 11-14

Picnic

The University of Tampa will present William Inge’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Picnic Oct. 11–14. Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Falk Theatre, located at 428 W. Kennedy Blvd., across from the University.

The play explores life in 1951 small-town America, where lives are filled with uncertainty, longing, hope and desire. Into this world of complacency wanders a sensual drifter, who ignites buried passions. “What I have wanted most to do,” Inge wrote in 1966, “is to present the lives in Picnic with all the warmth and humor and fondness and dismay that attended me when I recalled them.”

In this production, director Kerry Glamsch, visiting instructor of theatre, celebrates UT’s culturally diverse student population with a non-traditional casting approach that adds depth and resonance to an award-winning masterpiece. The scenic and lighting design is by Alex Amyot, UT’s technical production coordinator, and costume design is provided by Frank Chavez.

Admission is free for UT students, faculty and staff. General admission tickets are $15, senior citizens and non-UT students may purchase tickets for $10. For more information, call (813) 253-6243.

The show is sponsored by UT’s Department of Speech, Theatre and Dance.
