UT Students Argue Their Point, Advance to National Moot Court Tournament

For the first time in three years of competing in the Southeast Regional Moot Court tournament, UT students have advanced to the national tournament.

Morgan Tanafon ’10 and John Windham ’13 took third place out of 24 competing teams this past weekend and will represent UT at the American Collegiate Moot Court Association 2010 National Tournament in Miami, hosted by the Florida International University College of Law Jan.15-16.

Along with Tanafon and Windham, Ashley Dignam ’10, Dana Stewart ’12, Gretchen Cothron ’10 and Diana Lott ’11 all advanced to the top 16 teams on the second day of the regional tournament which was hosted at UT. Brianna Welsh ’12 individually ranked eight out of 48 orators.

“These students worked hard and demonstrated their oral advocacy talent, rising to the top of a pool of highly competitive and experienced participants from across the country,” said Alisa Smith, UT associate professor of criminology and criminal justice. “I am very proud of my whole team; this was a team effort.”

All students in her Appellate Advocacy/Moot Court Competition class spent the semester hosting mock practices at each other’s homes, meeting early before classes or late after the day was over.

With the national tournament in their sights, Tanafon and Windham’s classmates have offered to help them prepare. The Stetson University College of Law Moot Court team will help with the training and many of the students in the appellate advocacy class are planning a road-trip to Miami to support their classmates as they compete for the national moot court championship.
