Les Misérables, colloquially known as
Les Mis, is the story of Jean Valjean, a peasant in early 19th century France imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Finally released on parole, a kindly bishop inspires Valjean to break his parole and start a new life, but he is dogged by a police inspector named Javert and swept up in a rebellion.
