UT Soccer Player Nominated for NCAA-II Athlete of the Year
University of Tampa women’s soccer player Shannon Aitken was nominated
last week as a candidate for the 2007-08 NCAA-II Athlete of the Year.
Aitken is one of four student athletes nominated from the fall season and will be among 11 finalists for the award, which will be announced in June 2008.
“It’s an honor to be nominated, but I honestly would not be nominated if it was not for my teammates,” Aitken said. “The women’s soccer program has come a long way and I’m just so proud of this team and the success we have had this year and in years past.”
A senior nursing major from Land O’Lakes, FL, Aitken was instrumental in securing the Spartans’ national championship win Dec. 1, against Franklin Pierce College. The win was the first time the women’s soccer team has won a national championship in its 10-year history.
Playing as goalkeeper throughout her four years at UT, Aitken concluded her career with school records of 40 shutouts and 59 career wins. She ended her senior season with a record of 20-2-3 in goal with a 0.61 GAA and allowing just 16 goals in 25 matches.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) previously honored Aitken as The National Player of the Year for women’s soccer.
The American Honda Motor Co., Inc. donates $1,000 to the women’s athletic fund at the university of each Athlete of the Year finalist. Additionally, the company donates $5,000 to the school of the award’s recipient.
This year’s award will be presented at a press conference June 23 at Columbia University in New York City.
