UT Session to Promote Science and Technology to High School Women
A group of information technology professors, female industry
executives, and female University of Tampa math and information
technology majors will sit down with female students from area high
schools on Saturday, April 18, at 3 p.m. on the University campus to
discuss careers in science and technology.
The University of Tampa’s Department of Information and Technology Management, the University’s Management Information Systems (MIS) Advisory Board and the Tampa Bay Technology Leadership Association (TBTLA) will co-host GETSMART (Getting Everyone To Study Math And Related Technologies), a discussion to promote careers in math, science and technology among girls.
Last year, an inaugural GETSMART roundtable discussion included a focus group of local middle school girls, female UT math and MIS majors, and female industry executives.
According to Natasha Veltri, UT assistant professor of information and technology management, women account for approximately 60 percent of the university enrollments, however, information technology program enrollments are only 20 percent female.
“At the same time information technology is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupational areas over the next decade by the U.S. Department of Labor,” Veltri said.
Some of the local Tampa Bay area schools invited to participate include Plant High School, Newsome High School, Alonso High School, Lakewood High School, Northeast High School, Dunedin High School, Clearwater High School, Palm Harbor University High School and Countryside High School.
The GETSMART meeting will be held on Saturday, April 18, at 3 p.m. in the John H. Sykes College of Business Room 134.
