UT Nursing Professor Appointed to Medical Ethics Subcommittee
Suzanne Edgett Collins, associate professor in The University of Tampa’s
Department of Nursing, was recently appointed to the Defense Health
Board Medical Ethics Subcommittee.
This federal advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Defense provides independent scientific advice and recommendations on matters relating to health care delivery, research and policy for all U.S. service members and all Department of Defense beneficiaries.

Collins is a nurse-attorney with extensive experience in the areas of medical and nursing malpractice, legal and bioethics education of allied health care practitioners, and consultation practice in licensure defense, forensic criminal defense, health law and policy, and health care risk management. She is licensed as a nurse in Florida and Pennsylvania, and is a member of the bars of Florida and Washington, D.C. She also has been admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Collins earned her J.D. from Stetson University College of Law, and her Ph.D. in nursing is from the University of South Florida. In addition, Collins holds a Master’s Degree in public health, health policy and management, also from USF.
Collins’ expertise focuses on the intersections of law, ethics, health policy/economics and nursing. Her research interests include: issues of nursing law and ethics; patient safety and nursing error; and social and behavioral issues among nurses. Collins is the assistant editor for the Journal of Nursing Law and has published frequently in peer reviewed and professional journals.
