UT Fine Arts Faculty to Show Their Expertise at Exhibition Nov. 3–25

Stop by the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery Nov. 3–25 for a chance to see the diversity and expertise of The University of Tampa’s art faculty.

The Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition features photographs, paintings, sculptures, digital images, drawings, installations and mixed media.

Santiago Echeverry, associate professor of art, is showing Andante Spianato, an experimental video dance captured with a Kinect sensor that studies the nature of classical ballet gestures in decomposed 3D pixels and lines.

The piece includes choreography by Susannah LeMarquand, assistant professor of dance, with the music, Chopin’s Andante Spianto, performed by Grigorios Zamparas, associate professor music.

The works Ina Kaur, assistant professor of art, is showing are a combination of large-scale multilayer etching prints and mixed media works done on handmade paper. The large-scale prints are displayed along with mixed media installation of handmade glass-blown bottles with prints.

“In our global cultural environments, where nationalities and localities intersect and our identities and boundaries converge, the work explores a continuum of cross-cultural negotiation,” said Kaur.

Jack King, professor of art, will show three recently completed sculptural works that have a strong correlation to the work of the surrealists, especially the literary genre of magic realism that present strange and “magical” elements in a logical and rational way.

“I’m more intrigued by the idea of using common and familiar objects combined in strange and often seemingly illogical ways, but ways that become more rational with repeated engagement,” said King.

Other faculty exhibiting work include Catherine Chastain-Elliott, Kendra Frorup, Lew Harris, Michael Ingold, Brooke Scherer, Doug Sutherland and Chris Valle.

The campus and Tampa Bay community are invited to a reception honoring the art faculty on Friday, Nov. 7, from 7–9 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibition, on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. witness the interplay of visual art, dance and music at an Evening of Experimental Dance. During this event, UT student dancers will create movement inspired by the art in the gallery. Choreography will change to incorporate dance shapes that specifically relate to the artwork around the dancers as well as the music.

The gallery is located on campus at the R. K. Bailey Art Studios, 310 N. Blvd. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. There is no charge for admission.
