Spartans Continue NCAA Fight with Today’s Game

The University of Tampa Spartans continue their fight for the 2010 NCAA Division II national title in a 3 p.m. game today against Georgia College & State University at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC.

The Spartans, ranked No. 2 in the nation, lost 3-0 to the University of Central Missouri in the opening round of the championships on Saturday, May 22, following the May 17 capture of the 2010 Division II South Region baseball championship.

Coach Joe Urso ’92, a former Spartan All-American, said that the first game in the tournament is the hardest because the players come with hyped energy and intensity, something he wanted to try and tame before the tournament began.

Today’s game is scheduled for 3 p.m., as the winner advances to play on Wednesday at 3 p.m. versus the loser of Monday evening's Central Missouri vs. UC San Diego contest. A win for the Spartans would keep them in the running for the national title.

UT designated hitter Mike Schwartz was honored May 23 with the announcement of the 2010 Daktronics NCAA Division II Baseball All-America Teams. Schwartz was named as a second-team All-American as fellow Spartans Patrick Donahue (utility) and Evan Stobbs (relief pitcher) were honorable mention selections. A total of 45 student-athletes, representing 33 institutions were named to either the first, second or third team All-America squad, while 18 were named honorable mention.
