Sociology Professor and Students Awarded for Best Humanist Magazine Article

Ryan Cragun, University of Tampa assistant professor of sociology, and two of his students, Stephanie Yeager ’12 and Desmond Vega ’12, received the Council for Secular Humanism’s recognition for best humanist magazine article to appear in 2012.

The prestigious Selma V. Forkosch Award for Best Article of 2012 will be presented at the upcoming CFI Summit, the joint conference of the Council for Secular Humanism, the Center for Inquiry and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry to be held in October in Tacoma, Washington.

Cragun and his team were honored for their article “How Secular Humanists (and Everyone Else) Subsidize Religion in the United States.” The article, a research report, attracted wide attention with its finding that tax exemptions granted to religious organizations cost government at least $71 billion per year.
