In honor of the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl on Friday, Oct. 11, UT will screen the award-winning documentary
Girl Rising.
The documentary will be shown at 8 p.m. in Reeves Theater in the Vaughn Center on campus. This screening is open to the public and free of charge.
Girl Rising, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, is an innovative feature film that spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. The film features remarkable girls like Sokha, an orphan who rises from the dumps of Cambodia to become a star student and an accomplished dancer; Suma, who composes music to help her endure forced servitude in Nepal and today crusades to free others; and Ruksana, an Indian “pavement-dweller” whose father sacrifices his own basic needs for his daughter’s dreams.
Narrated by a star-studded cast, the documentary “showcases the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.”
The screening is sponsored by UT’s Department of Communication.
