One of Europe's Top Chamber Ensembles to Perform at UT
The internationally-acclaimed Swiss Wind Quintet will perform a chamber
music concert on Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m. at the Reeves Theater in the
Vaughn Center on The University of Tampa campus.
The quintet will be joined by UT faculty pianist Grigorios Zamparas and by renowned ensemble pianist Michiko Otaki. Zamparas, who joined the faculty in 2006, is an internationally-known concert pianist who has received critical acclaim for his versatile performing career as a recitalist, orchestra soloist and chamber musician. Otaki is the director of keyboard studies at Clayton State University in Georgia.
The concert is free and open to the public, and is presented by UT’s Department of Music.
The Swiss Wind Quintet, of Basel, Switzerland, opens its American tour with this Tampa debut. The ensemble, founded in 1985, is considered one of Europe's top chamber ensembles. It includes clarinetist Urs Brügger, flutist Liam Mallett, oboist Mi-Young Park, hornist Henryk Kalinksi and bassoonist David Schneebeli.
The quintet will perform pieces from three centuries of chamber music, which includes Mozart’s “Quintet in E-flat, K. 452 for Piano and Winds,” a piece by Hungarian/Romanian composer György Ligeti and a sextet by the late-Romantic Austrian composer Ludwig Thuille.
A review in the Star-Ledger (NJ) newspaper stated that the quintet was “an admirably well-tempered group with a potent sense of inner balance and the ability to move as a unit through infinitely tricky and various musical terrain. Their attack is bracing and precise, the sound dynamic, even brawny at times…”
The quintet’s American tour is made possible in part through the support of Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.
