National Champions Receive Commendation from Tampa City Council

The 2014 national championship University of Tampa volleyball team received a commendation from the Tampa City Council on Thursday morning with the presentation of the program's honors.

Head coach Chris Catanach was also presented with a plaque noting the commendation, with council members Charlie Miranda and Mike Suarez taking time to praise The University of Tampa athletic program.

In addition to Catanach, assistant coach Brian Imperiale and AVCA National Player of the Year Berkley Whaley were also at the podium for recognition. Larry Marfise, the director of athletics, was also on hand with a number of athletic administrators.

The Spartans capped the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep over Southwest Minnesota State to capture the second national championship in program history, and first since 2006. UT was 34-1 on the season with an unblemished 16-0 Sunshine State Conference mark.

Catanach's squad also earned five All-Region Selections, one South Region Coach of the Year award, five All-American honors, one AVCA Player of the Year award, and one South Region Player of the Year honor. In addition, Tampa garnered seven All-Sunshine State Conference selections, one SSC Player of the Year award and six Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week awards.

In terms of national spotlight, the Spartans enjoyed 10-straight weeks ranked as the nation's top team, and never ranked lower than No. 2 throughout the season.
