Marketing Students Raise Money for Ronald McDonald Houses

University of Tampa students used $1,000 to raise thousands this semester when they created a marketing campaign for a local fundraiser to benefit three Ronald McDonald Houses of Tampa Bay.

The $1,000 came as a grant from the American Marketing Association Foundation to the student chapter of the American Marketing Association. The money was used to create a marketing campaign for the local fundraiser, a 10k/5k road race, held by Pediatric Services of Florida on Feb. 23 in St. Petersburg.

The students’ goal for the project was to increase the number of participants in the race and volunteers on the sidelines. In addition, they hoped to increase donations from local businesses.

The students used the skills they had acquired in marketing, communication, art, advertising and public relations classes at UT to create a comprehensive marketing campaign for the race. They designed and placed ads in three college student newspapers and posted the event listing on TBO.com, tbt.com, tampabays10.com, and on the WUSF Web site. They printed fliers and posted them in churches, gyms, hospitals, medical offices, restaurants and the UT campus. They also put together donation jars to encourage local businesses to contribute to the cause.

Despite inclement weather, their efforts still resulted in a strong turnout.

“Although we had hoped to get 1,500 runners, the strong storms and torrential rain took a toll on our results,” said Amy Kornrumpf, AMA president. “However, the number was still over 1,200. If we factor in the bad weather, we are quite proud of the outcome.”

On April 3 the students traveled to New Orleans to receive recognition for the grant at the AMA International Collegiate Conference. Out of 250 collegiate AMA chapters, only 16 received the grant.

“We are very excited and proud of our greatly improved AMA chapter and our accomplishments this year,” said Kornrumpf.
