High School Teacher’s Workshop Nov. 17 Focuses on Chemistry

All Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate high school teachers from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Manatee and Sarasota counties are invited to participate in one-day workshop at The University of Tampa on Nov. 17 to learn how to inspire students to take their interest in chemistry outside of the classroom.

The free event will be held on the 9th floor of the Vaughn Center on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes lunch. The media is welcome to attend.

Co-sponsored by the Tampa Bay Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS), UT and Hillsborough County Public Schools, the focus of the workshop is improving the level of participation and performance in the local Chemathon and U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad competitions. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to equip teachers to not only improve student participation and performance in competition, but also to inspire their students to get involved in other ACS-sponsored programs such as ChemClubs, National Chemistry Week and ACS regional meetings.

The workshop includes a keynote address on the fundamentals of experiential learning followed by a brainstorming workshop on how to improve student preparation for the local and national Chemistry Olympiad competitions. There will be a presentation after lunch on strategies for effectively teaching general chemistry topics and labs, and the event will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Parking is available in the Thomas Parking Garage as well as the parking lot between the Vaughn Center and Plant Hall.
