Haig Mardirosian Named Dean of College of Arts and Letters at UT
The University of Tampa has named Dr. Haig Mardirosian, senior vice
provost, dean of academic affairs and professor of music at American
University, as the dean of the College of Arts and Letters.
As dean, Mardirosian will oversee the departments of art, communication, English and writing, language and linguistics, music, philosophy, and speech, theatre and dance.
“The University of Tampa has proven to be a place of enormous energy and creativity,” Mardirosian said. “I am both grateful and elated to have been invited to help advance the mission and reputation of its College of Arts and Letters.”
Mardirosian has served on the faculty of American University since 1976, and has held positions including director of the general education program, associate dean of academic affairs and director of the music division of the Department of Performing Arts.
UT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Janet McNew added that Mardirosian is an internationally renowned concert organist, recording artist, composer, and conductor as well as a music scholar and critic. He is the organist and choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes in Washington, D.C.
“We are very fortunate indeed to attract such an artist, scholar and academic leader to nurture this fledgling college,” McNew said.
Juliet Davis, UT associate professor of communication and chair of the search committee, said Mardirosian possesses the communication skills and public presence to mobilize faculty and build consensus.
“We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Mardirosian's stature coming to UT,” Davis said. “He indicated a profound respect and understanding of students and the learning process — along with a sincere desire to make each student’s learning experience more meaningful and each faculty’s work more flourishing.”
Mardirosian received his doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of America.
He will begin his post at UT on July 1.
