Guitarist Don Saginario to Give Concert at UT Nov. 2

On Monday, Nov. 2, Don Saginario, a member of The University of Tampa’s music technology and composition faculty, will give a contemporary guitar recital. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4 p.m. in Reeves Theater on the second floor of the Vaughn Center.

For the recital, Saginario will perform a fusion of traditional and modern jazz, blues and rock on electric guitar. The program will incorporate jazz standards and classic rock, as well as Sagniario’s own compositions, which include digital and analog sound effects.

Saginario, who has been performing since he was a teenager, was informally taught by John Kay of Sparrow (also known as Steppenwolf) and by Billy Joel. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a graduate degree in music from Herbert H. Lehman College, City University of New York. His teachers included jazz guitarists John Scofield and Joe Monk, as well as classical guitarists Jorge Morel and Jerry Willard.

He served as artist-in-residence in guitar at Long Island University’s Southampton College (now Stony Brook Southampton). Some high points in his career include playing with the late jazz flutist Herbie Mann at the Village Gate in New York City; Stan Bronstein, leader of Elephant’s Memory, John Lennon’s backup band; and with Vince Martell, founding member of the Vanilla Fudge, a popular 1960s rock band.
