GETSMART at UT Oct. 13

Continuing their effort to get more Tampa Bay area students excited about careers in math, science and technology, The University of Tampa’s Department of Information and Technology Management and the Tampa Bay Technology Leadership Association (TBTLA) will co-host GETSMART (Getting Everyone to Study Math and Related Technologies) on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sykes College of Business Room 134.

Though past GETSMART events have been open only to girls, for this session the organizers decided to open the event to boys as well. “As the demand for talent in science and technology continues to grow, increasing the STEM-aptitude of all students at all levels remains a top priority in Florida,” said Natasha Veltri, assistant professor of information and technology management and GETSMART program director.

The day will begin with a panel discussion between students and professionals who work in STEM-related fields. Then students will spend the rest of the day taking part in hands-on activities, such as designing a mobile application, taking apart a computer to see what’s inside, creating a Web page and learning about 3D printing for rapid prototyping. There will also be a drawing for raffle prizes.

GETSMART is open to fourth through 12th graders interested in learning more about careers in math, science and technology. The event free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
