German Minister of Economic Affairs to Discuss Euro Crisis at UT

Peter Fischer, minister of economic affairs at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., will be at The University of Tampa Thursday, Sept. 13, to discuss the German government’s perspective on the European economic crisis.

The lecture, part of the University’s Honors Symposia series, begins at 1 p.m. in the Vaughn Center, 9th Floor, Crescent Club and is free and open to the public. Members of the media are invited to a special Q-and-A session with Fischer following the presentation.

During the lecture, titled “The Euro Crisis,” Fischer will address what the “euro crisis” is, how it started and why it is important. He will stress that the euro crisis is less a crisis of the euro as a common currency and more a crisis of financial stability in the euro zone. Fischer will argue that the European Union is using the crisis to improve some of the challenges that the euro faces and to correct some of the deficits left when the euro was created.

Fischer is a career diplomat, who first joined the German Foreign Office in 1986. The focus of his career has been on economic and global issues. Before taking on his current role in the German Embassy in July 2011, Fischer was head of the Department for Economic and Financial Policy at the Foreign Office in Berlin. He has served the German government in Israel, England, France, Shanghai and Singapore.

This lecture is made possible through a generous gift from The Duckwall Foundation. For more information, contact the Honors Program at (813) 257-3545 or honors@ut.edu.
