Artists and other creative professionals can learn how to pursue their
artistic passions and still make a living by attending the second
annual Self Employment in the Arts conference at The University of
Tampa on Saturday, April 12.
This unique, artist-led
conference, titled “Helping Artists Prevail in the Business World,”
will present entrepreneurial strategies and resources for student
artists and emerging artists to become self-supporting and successful
in their various careers.
Artists will have the opportunity to
network with other artists, as well as experts in fields that impact
today’s world of performing arts. Last year 170 individuals attended
the inaugural conference.
The conference will open on
Saturday, April 12 at 9 a.m. with an all-conference session by Malcolm
A. Teasdale, who leads the creative force and is the marketing expert
behind Teasdale Worldwide, a strategic marketing company. Teasdale’s
talk is titled “Succeeding on Your Terms.” Other keynotes will be given
by freelance artists Christopher Still, Carol Mickett and Robert
Stackhouse, and by Brent C.J. Britton, an attorney with the law firm
Squires Sanders & Dempsey.
Conference workshops that
follow include topics such as marketing, legal issues, auditioning and
finding freelance niches. Session speakers include attorneys,
entrepreneurs, business owners, successful performance artists, acting
coaches, editors and professors.
Dr. Dianne Welsh, UT
professor of management and founder and chair of the southern regional
conference, said The University of Tampa recognizes the importance of
the artistic community in economic growth, quality of life, and our
ability to keep our momentum as a community growing.
“Our mission is to grow businesses, and artists are vital to that mission,” Welsh said.
