Artist Joyce J. Scott to Visit UT
The University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery is welcoming
internationally acclaimed artist Joyce J. Scott to campus Feb. 11-20.
Scott will present a gallery talk Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. and will remain on campus as a visiting artist through Feb. 20, when she will conclude her visit with an open house for the public to view her work in the gallery’s Studio-F.
A native of Baltimore, MD, Scott’s work incorporates various artistic media, including sculpture, jewelry making, printmaking, installation art and performance art. Her pieces draw strong influence from a wide-range of sources, from pop culture to African American culture.
The use of beads is a central element throughout Scott’s work; helping turn her works into bold statements about such issues as racism, sexism, violence and injustice.
“The originality of her work places her among the important pioneers in art today,” said Keith Morrison, dean of the College of Creative Arts, San Francisco State University.
The exhibit of Scott’s work runs through March 6 and at the University’s R.K. Bailey Art Studios, located at 310 North Boulevard. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 1-4 p.m.
