Communication Research Methods
Samuel M. Tham is a researcher with a keen interest towards media psychology, especially in digital advertising in the areas of avoidance and approach. In addition, he is interested in the ramifications of problematic video gaming in the digital age. Prior to academia, Tham worked in the industry for several years, first as a founder of his online gaming company and later as an advertising account executive.
Professional and Community Activities: Tham's research focuses on advertising avoidance, media psychology and processes that affect decision making. As a scholar, Tham uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods, specializing in surveys and experimental research. He is interested in pioneering new methodological ways to approach research.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes teamwork, professional integrity and a unified vision that values the “big picture” and the goals of the organization over individual accomplishments. His personal work motto is to always “ask more of yourself, try harder and never give up.” After a successful stint in the business world, Tham returned to academia, because he is interested in generating ideas and creating knowledge, as well as imparting skills to the generation after him. He wholeheartedly believes that the work done as a researcher should bridge, guide and complement the industry.
