Career Specialties:

Richard Mathews has written numerous books on the subject of fantasy and science fiction, including Fantasy: The Liberation of Imagination; Lightning from a Clear Sky: Tolkien, the Trilogy, and the Silmarillion; The Clockwork Universe of Anthony Burgess; Aldiss Unbound: The Science Fiction of Brian W. Aldiss; and Worlds beyond the World: The Fantastic Vision of William Morris. His poetry has appeared in many literary magazines and anthologies, and he has published two collections of poems, A Mummery and Numbery. 

Professional and Community Activities: Poet, editor, journalist and literary critic, Richard Mathews is a leading authority on science fiction and fantasy. He also continues to explore relationships between visual and verbal arts in the work of the Pre-Raphaelites and in contemporary art and literature, including multimedia and Internet forms. He is the director of The University of Tampa Press, editor of Tampa Review and director of the Tampa Book Arts Studio.
