UT Student Newspaper Online Site Wins Award of Excellence

The University of Tampa’s student newspaper, The Minaret, recently won a general excellence award for its online site, The Minaret Online, in the 2013 Associated Collegiate Press Newspaper Online Pacemaker contest.

The Minaret Online was one of five sites recognized in the “Newspaper 5001-10000 Enrollment” category. Other winners included the online sites at Biola University, Harvard University, Ithaca College and Eugene Lang College.

The Online Pacemaker is ACP’s highest honor for online college student publications. This competition began in 1995 as the first nationwide competition for online college student publications.

Criteria for the award includes that the site must be produced and maintained primarily by students. The contest was judged by a panel of professionals with extensive online media experience. Judges noted that the most successful sites had clean and accessible designs, excellent writing and editing, strong handling of breaking news and had superb social integration.

Winners were announced at the ACP National College Media Convention.
