Published: February 17, 2009
The John H. Sykes College of Business at The University of Tampa has named Dr. Rebecca J. White as the new Distinguished Walter Chair in Entrepreneurship. As the holder of the Walter Chair of Entrepreneurship, White will also lead the Florida Entrepreneur and Family Business Programs at the Sykes College of Business.

White serves as professor of management and director of the Fifth Third Bank Entrepreneurship Institute at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). Under her leadership the entrepreneurship programs at NKU were ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation by The Princeton Review and received numerous national awards for innovative curricula and program offerings. As director of entrepreneurship programs at NKU she raised $2.25 million in private funding, obtained $1.7 million in grants, increased faculty positions in entrepreneurship, and saw the number of students studying entrepreneurship each semester grow from zero to more than 200.

At NKU White also created the Women’s Entrepreneurship Institute, a web-based educational program for female entrepreneurs, which is co-sponsored by The New York Times. She was named 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in the Supporter of Entrepreneurship category. She also serves on the national board for the United States Association for Entrepreneurship and Small Business and the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.

Dr. F. Frank Ghannadian, dean of the Sykes College of Business, said White’s outstanding track record in research and entrepreneurship will greatly benefit UT.

“This is a very high profile position given that entrepreneurship majors are the fastest growing majors in the country,” Ghannadian said.

White is the co-founder of two companies, RiskAware, a company that focuses on risk mitigation services for colleges and universities and adEsse LLC, a consulting firm specializing in strategic planning for fast growth entrepreneurial companies and non-profit organizations.

White received an MBA and a doctorate in strategic management, marketing and entrepreneurship from Virginia Tech University. She will begin her post at UT on Aug. 15.
