Minor in Dance

The dance minor offers a basic introduction for teaching dance to a wide variety of populations. This minor consists of dance technique, pedagogy, anatomy and kinesiology, and dance history courses. Students will be prepared for a wide range of career choices upon graduation.

There are no prerequisites to begin work in the dance minor program but a placement class for technique studies is required. Students pursuing a minor have the same performance opportunities as those seeking a major.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to audition to become an dance minor?
No. You do not need to audition to declare a dance minor. However, students must reach competency on at least the intermediate level in ballet, modern, and jazz or tap to fulfill the requirements for the minor so a placement place will be required.

Are there scholarships available?
Dance scholarships are avaiable to declared dance majors only. However, general financial aid is available to all students. Please speak with a financial aid counselor for assistance.

How do I get involved in campus dance productions?
We sponsor four major dance productions each year—one production each semester featuring choreography by UT students, the annual Spring Dance Concert with faculty and other professional choreographers, and the Evening of Experimental Dance. All students are eligible to audition (whether or not they are dance minors or enrolled in dance classes). Additional performing opportunities, both on- and off-campus, are available as well.

How does this differ from the dance/theatre minor?
The Dance/Theatre minor is geared toward development and expansion of theatrical talents and skills as well as knowledge about the performing arts. The requirements for each minor program differ.

Can I do both?
Yes. Courses that are required for both minors will apply to both.

What are dance minor students going after graduation?
Some of our alumni have opened their own dance studios and many teach in private studios. Some are performing or just dancing for the fun of it.
