UT Presents World Premiere Staging of Blood Guilt: Orestes on Trial April 20–23

Make plans to be at the world premiere staging of Blood Guilt: Orestes on Trial at The University of Tampa April 20–23. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday–Saturday, April 20–22, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 23. All performances will be held in Falk Theatre, located at 428 W. Kennedy Blvd.

Blood Guilt: Orestes on Trial, adapted by UT’s Bob Gonzalez based on a translation by Ian Johnston, is a modern version of the Oresteia trilogy of Aeschylus. This monumental work of the first Athenian playwright tells the story of the cursed House of Atreus, where the sins of the family’s ancestors are visited upon four succeeding generations.

After a series of complicated past crimes by his ancestors, Orestes, son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, is driven to matricide and relentlessly pursued by the Furies — demons revenging the spirit of his mother. He journeys for sanctuary to Athens, where the city’s patron goddess, Athena, establishes the first court ever to try a murder charge. Apollo, god of Truth, defends Orestes by presenting the court tribunal a vision of past events leading up to and including the murder.

The production features a cast and crew of 24 UT students, supported by a design crew of professionals and led by director Bob Gonzalez, UT associate professor of speech and theatre.
