Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) Vaccination Requirement

The State of Florida University System requires all students born after 1956 to present proof of immunity to measles and rubella. In addition, The University of Tampa requires documentation proof of immunity to mumps. The documentation for measles and mumps consists of at least one of the following: documentation of two doses of live measles virus vaccine on or after first birthday or laboratory (blood) evidence of measles immunity. Please go to SpartanWeb, click on the Orientation tab and go to the Send Health Forms link to download forms.

Since there is no evidence of increased risk from measles/mumps re-vaccination, it is recommended that those students who cannot provide an immunization date after extended research and those who cannot prove immunity through a measles blood titer, be vaccinated/re-vaccinated prior to registration. All immunizations should be given in accordance with the recommendations of the United States Public Health Service, Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Note: If documentation of two doses of MMR or measles and mumps titers is not provided to medical services and there is an outbreak of measles or mumps, the student will be excluded from campus including attending classes, University events and campus living for an indeterminate amount of time as determined by the Florida Department of Health Hillsborough County.

Deadline for submission is July 1 for fall entrance and Dec. 1 for spring entrance.

Meningitis Vaccine Requirement

Meningitis vaccine protects against bacterial meningitis. ALL students living in campus housing are required to provide proof of the meningitis vaccination. If the first dose is given on or after the the student's 16th birthday, no booster is needed; but if the first dose was given before the 16th birthday a booster is needed. This record must be submitted to the health center before you can check into your residence hall. To read more about this vaccine, please go to the vaccine information sheet provided by the CDC.

Note: If documentation of one dose of meningitis vaccine within the past five years is not provided to medical services and there is an outbreak of meningitis, the student will be excluded from campus including attending classes, University events and campus living for an indeterminate amount of time as determined by the Florida Department of Health Hillsborough County.

New students: please go to SpartanWeb, click on the Orientation tab and go to the Send Health Forms link, for the required forms.

Additional Vaccinations

Hepatitis B Proof of Immunization Series is required. You are required to sign a waiver if you opt not to have the Hepatitis B series. To read more about the Hepatitis B vaccine, please go to the vaccine information sheet provided by the CDC.

Tetanus vaccination is required every 10 years for prophylactic purposes. In the event of a “dirty” puncture wound, it is recommended to have a tetanus vaccination within five years. Currently, the best booster available is Adacel, which is a combination of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Recently, there has been an increase in pertussis (“whooping cough”), and the latest CDC recommendations are to boost for this with the tetanus and diptheria, even for adults.

Influenza vaccinations are also available each fall after Oct. 1. This vaccine is highly recommended for all students, especially students living in residence halls and students with chronic health problems.

HPV vaccinations are given as a series of three shots over six months to protect against HPV infection and the health problems that HPV infection can cause. This vaccination is recommended for young women through age 26, as well as young men through age 21.

Meningococcal Group B vaccinations are newly recommended for all students up to 25 years of age, especially students living in residence halls. This vaccine is given in a series of two shots one month apart. This is a separate vaccine from the Meningitis vaccine (MCV4) that is required for all students living in residence halls. Meningococcal Group B protects against meningitis serogroup B, whereas the required MCV4 does not protect against this strain of the disease.
