The Office of Campus Recreation regularly hosts national fitness certifications right here on campus at the McNiff Fitness Center. The certifications are open to the public, but only UT students and staff are eligible for a discount.
Upon successful completion of a certification workshop, students are encouraged to apply to work at the McNiff Fitness Center as personal trainers or group fitness instructors. There is a mentorship and internal training requirement to ensure that only quality fitness staff is working in the facility. Group fitness instructors shadow veteran instructors and begin team-teaching with their guidance. The new instructor then schedules a time for an interview “demo” class to showcase his/her teaching abilities and be approved to have a class on the schedule. New instructors are not paid for the time spent team-teaching or for the interview demo class.
Personal trainers who are hired will attend a three-day training that will cover: policy and procedure, fitness assessment and testing, special populations, goal setting and exercise program design. On the last day of the training, the trainer will have a practical skills demonstration and be given various client scenarios to handle. The population we serve as personal trainers in the McNiff Fitness Center is very diverse in physical ability, and we want to ensure a competent staff who can provide an excellent experience for all clientele.
