Education Abroad

Spartans Abroad

University of Tampa students in all majors have the opportunity to build their credentials through an education abroad program. UT’s education abroad programs prepare University of Tampa students to be global-ready. Today’s employers seek graduates who can communicate in at least one foreign language, have multi-cultural knowledge, possess skills and training in negotiating with people of different cultures and have the basic skills to travel and work outside of the United States.

Where to Begin

Visit the Office of International Programs to discuss opportunities with an education abroad advisor. Specifically, students may contact Katie Pazda or Clara Ohannes. Student walk-in hours are in Plant Hall 304 and 306; dates and times may vary due to office events, so please refer to the current calendar. All other times are by appointment.

Visit the Spartans Abroad Program Portal to search education abroad programs and begin the UT Education Abroad Application.

UT students may take advantage of a variety of education abroad opportunities:

UT Travel Courses Abroad
Nearly 300 students participate in a UT Travel courses each year. Developed by a faculty member, most courses are taught during the spring semester and feature a travel component during spring break or at the end of the semester. In addition, winter intersession travel courses are often available. For Spring 2014, 11 different courses are offered, including three Honors Abroad courses. The Executive MBA for Business Leaders Program also requires a three-week international travel component.

Summer and Semester/Year Abroad Programs
Study at another university abroad and acquire educational experience in fields varying from business to foreign languages. Students take courses in English or in the language of the host country and work with an education abroad advisor in the Office of International Programs to ensure UT course equivalencies. Approximately 120 UT students spent a semester or year abroad in 2011-2012, often in less traditional locations such as India, China, Japan, South Africa, Dubai, Cyprus, Brazil, Costa Rica, Hungary and Russia. The Honors Program subsidizes six students to study for a semester at Oxford University in the UK each year.

International Internships
Gain valuable experience and become more culturally aware by completing an international internship. There are many internships which specialize in placing you in a company that best matches your major, interests, experience, and skill set. Learn how you can earn academic credit while enjoying an education abroad experience by consulting with an education abroad advisor and UT’s internship coordinator.

Community-Based Service Learning
Unite volunteer service and travel abroad in order to benefit communities outside the United States. Students receive official notation on their co-curricular transcript for community-based service learning. Students should discuss service-learning opportunities with an education abroad advisor.
