See UT's online catalog for all required courses. See also admissions to teacher education and general education major requirements.

Teaching Exams and Certification

In order to become a certified teacher, candidates must pass three examinations. One of the tests will be built into the admission process for the Department of Education. The remaining two exams will be required for graduation. The exams physical education majors must pass include:

  • General Knowledge Test (GK): All candidates must take and pass all sections of this exam to be admitted into UT’s Department of Education.
  • Professional Education, Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FCTE): All candidates must pass the professional education exam to become a certified teacher.
  • Physical Education Subject Area, Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FCTE): All physical education candidates must pass this exam to become certified teachers of physical education (grades K-12).
  • NOTE: Physical education majors planning to teach at the high school level must also take and pass the Health Subject Area, Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FCTE).

Program Specialties

Physical education majors take courses that focus on the exercise sciences. As a result, many candidates are able to pass the biology subject area FCTE exam. This allows candidates to add biology to their teacher certification, if they wish.

Additionally, those in the physical education program are asked to become members of Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. UT candidates are required to submit presentation proposals for the Florida Alliance state conference in Orlando. This is a great way to enhance professional skills prior to graduation.

Student Leadership Activities

Candidates may join education focused extra-curricular activities to enhance their college experience. Clubs and societies include:

  • Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society for Education
  • Student Leadership Group (B.E.L.I. E.V.E.)
