Criminology Scholars Program
In order to reward outstanding students, the criminology department offers the Criminology Scholars Program. The purpose of this program is to introduce the students to renowned practitioners in the field of criminal justice.
Each semester a person from the community is selected to teach a two credit hour course in their area of expertise. Students are invited to enroll in the class based upon their GPA, interest in the subject matter, and a recommendation from a criminology faculty member. Participating students have gained knowledge not available elsewhere, made contacts that may assist in career planning, and are introduced to outstanding professionals from our community.
Recent classes have been taught by Joe Navarro, retired special agent for the FBI; Julianne Holt, public defender for Hillsborough County; Robert Bickel, professor of law at Stetson University College of Law; and Steve Gustat, chief investigator for Capital Collateral Regional Counsel. Future faculty for this course will include members from the correctional field, law professors, judges and media specialists.
