Using Handshake to look for Experience

Use Handshake to look for internships and part-time/full-time work. We vet thousands of employers from all over the US, along with full-time, part-time positions and internships from various industries on our Handshake website. This portal also serves as a communication tool for us, so be sure to check your UT emails to get updates about events you may be interested in attending and employers you'd like to meet.

Be sure to make your Handshake profile public to allow employers to view your profile and contact you with opportunities for which they think you’ll be a good fit.

Read the below steps to make sure you take advantage of all that Handshake offers.

  1. Click the Handshake chiclet on your MyUTampa account.
  2. Using the top toolbar, hover over the profile circle image at the top right, then click “My Profile” and make sure to update it completely. Once you’ve completed that, upload a critiqued resume to the “My Documents” section.
To get your resume critiqued, come in for drop-in hours or make an appointment with a career coach.
  3. To search for a job or internship, click “Jobs" at the top left of our Handshake home screen. Use industry-specific keywrds in the search bar, and adapt the filter options based on your preference. Filter through available positions, adapt your application materials, and apply! Be sure to follow up with the company contact affiliated with the job/internship posting. If you can't find a contact on the Jobs tab, try looking for public staff under the "Employers" tab at the top left of your screen. (If you still cannot find a company contact, come to drop-ins or schdule an appointment so we can help you navigate Handshake and/or LinkedIn.)
  4. Using the top toolbar, click on “Events” and register to attend helpful workshops/events/career fairs (free for students/alumni).
