Modern Abstract AlgebraCareer Specialties
Dr. Garman began his career as a theoretical mathematician, but his
interests have evolved into using known principles of mathematics to
solve everyday problems. Professional and Community Activities:
Dr. Garman combined his interest in tennis and computers to develop an
algorithm to manage the U.S. Tennis Association's National Championship
for Boys 16 and 18. That solution evolved into the Garman System for
match scheduling, used throughout the country. He also referees tennis
matches in NCAA competitions.
He consults on the use of Macintosh computers. His published articles
include "Inverse Functions, Rubik's Cube, and Algebra," The Mathematics
Teacher (1984), and "Applying a Linear Function to Schedule Tennis
Matches," The Mathematics Teacher (1983).
