UT to Welcome Guest Bass Clarinetist for Concert of New Music Oct. 23

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, The University of Tampa will welcome Calvin Falwell, bass clarinetist for the Sarasota Orchestra for a concert in the Plant Hall Music Room. The program for the performance includes “Say It!” by Bradford Blackburn, chair/associate professor of music and director of music technology and composition at UT. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

“Say It!” was originally commissioned and premiered by Falwell, and is an electroacoustic work for bass clarinet and fixed media through which the machine becomes the narrator and seeks to control its human operator.

A woodwind performing artist for Buffet Group USA and D’Addario, Falwell is quickly becoming a sought-after soloist and chamber music collaborator, gaining praise from cities and audiences around the world. He has appeared with more than 12 orchestras and toured internationally. Constantly in demand as a clinician, Falwell has presented master classes at numerous festivals and universities, including UT.

Blackburn has composed more than 100 works in a variety of media, and his compositions have been presented at peer-reviewed conferences in Europe, North America, and South America. Blackburn has promoted experimental music in the Tampa Bay area through the various concerts he has organized at The University of Tampa.
