UT and TGH Partner to Provide Health and Counseling Services for UT Students

The University of Tampa today announced that it has partnered with Tampa General Hospital (TGH) to provide UT’s more than 8,000 students with on-campus health and counseling services, effective June 1.

UT has provided on-campus health and counseling services to students for many decades, and currently provides services to students at the Dickey Health and Wellness Center. The services include treatment for acute illnesses and injuries, immunizations, women’s services, allergy injections, counseling and more.

UT had been with its current contractor, TeamHealth, for more than 20 years. Most Dickey Health and Wellness Center staff will remain with the center so no disruption in services is anticipated. A medical director will be named at a later time.

According to Gina Firth, UT associate dean of wellness, the transition to TGH will be seamless, and the partnership will allow students to enjoy increased benefits, including after hours care at nearby TGH clinics and a coordination of care.

“TGH is one of the nation’s best hospitals with a plethora of community resources, so we are excited that UT students will receive the best on-campus care possible,” Firth said. “The health and wellness of our students is critically important to their educational success, so this is a tremendous step.”

Most services at the Dickey Health and Wellness Center, which was built in 2010 and named after donors Dr. Stephen F. and Marsha Dickey, are covered by students’ health insurance policy, so there are few out-of-pocket costs for routine student health needs. Students’ insurance policy costs will not increase next year as part of the new partnership.

TGH was selected by UT in a thorough review of national and regional alternatives.

“TGH is proud to partner with the University to provide medical care to its students,” said Dr. James Tanner, senior vice president of Tampa General Medical Group. “We look forward to extending the TGH network and providing students comprehensive medical care.”

UT and TGH have been longtime partners in various activities. UT’s nursing students hold clinical rotations at TGH, and for the past several years all of its graduates have passed the nursing certification examination on the first attempt. UT students also participate in research projects at TGH, and various student organizations and sports teams regularly volunteer at TGH.
