UT Selected to Participate in Prestigious Global Health Care Competition

The University of Tampa has been selected as one of 24 universities nationwide to participate in the prestigious Emory Global Health Competition on April 8–9, 2016, at Emory University in Atlanta.

The Emory Global Health Case Competition is a unique opportunity for Emory graduate and undergraduate students from multiple schools and disciplines to come together to promote awareness of and develop innovative solutions for 21st century global health issues. In 2010, Emory Global Health Institute opened the competition to students from other U.S. universities, and in 2012 the competition welcomed student teams from international universities.

Competitors from previous years include Johns Hopkins, Harvard, University of California, Berkeley and UCLA.

Mia Plachkinova, UT assistant professor of cybersecurity, is leading the UT effort and is eager to help UT students find viable solutions to global health challenges.

"Transdisciplinary work is key to the success of the team, as the health cases are very comprehensive and the posed problems span across various fields," she said. "Thus, students learn to communicate with their peers from other disciplines and expand their knowledge to other domains. Everyone brings a unique perspective to the team and this is what makes the competition so exciting."

Between now and April, Plachkinova will choose the best students to represent the university.
