UT Choirs Present Bach to Broadway at Final Concert May 4

“Everything from Bach to Broadway” will be presented at The University of Tampa concert featuring a women’s choir, Camerata, and Chamber Singers, a mixed choir, on Monday, May 4.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values on the UT campus.

Ryan Hebert, a UT assistant professor of music and director of choral studies, said the concert “is probably the most varied concert since I've arrived here.”

Traditional, historical music such as “Vere anguores” by Tomás Luis de Victoria and Dixit Dominus of Johann Michael Haydn will be performed. And, a piece called “The Blue Eye of God” by Nancy Telfer will be sung, which was inspired by the Exxon Valdez oil spill and reflects man-made natural disasters.

“The singers emulate stranded dolphins, oil-girdled herons and other wildlife,” Hebert said. “Musicians can respond to injustice by bringing about awareness through effective music, like this, which aids in creating an aesthetic response to global issues.”

Other pieces include “Come Sweet Death” by J.S. Bach and “Nyon Nyon” by Jake Runested.

“The singers have fallen in love with this one,” Hebert said of the latter work. “The words make no sense, but the overall effect is that of a techno club with sound effects, percussion, sirens and pure fun.”
