Recital of Modern Masterworks for Piano Featuring Pianist Duncan J. Macmillan Nov. 18

On Sunday, Nov. 18, The University of Tampa will present a recital of modern masterworks for piano featuring pianist, harpsichordist, chamber musician and composer Duncan J. MacMillan. The recital begins at 3 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values and is free and open to the public.

This recital will present beautiful new works for solo piano written by American composers Michael Hennagin, Stephen Sewell and William Rea. The program includes Hennagin’s Piano Sonata No. 4; Sewell’s The Solemn Lady, Edward Variations and Sonata 1993; and Rea’s A Dissimulation of Birds and Before Breathlessly Melting Into Air. All the works on the program are pieces written for and dedicated to MacMillan.

MacMillan, who teaches piano and harpsichord at UT, has performed in civic and collegiate artist series in various states and at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. His works have been commissioned, commercially recorded, performed internationally and featured on NPR. In addition to playing the standard repertoire, he has premiered works by many composers, some of which have been written especially for him and has also maintained a piano studio since 1977.

In addition, he is artistic advisor to the National Society of Arts and Letters Tampa Bay Chapter and has served on the executive boards of both the Clearwater/Dunedin “Go for Baroque” Early Music Festival and the Florida State Music Teachers Association (FSMTA).
