UT’s PNC Bank Concert Artist Series Hosts World Percussionist Nov. 23

On Sunday, Nov. 23, The University of Tampa will welcome world percussionist Tom Teasley — described as “a percussionist in the widest and most exuberant sense” (Washington Post) — as part of the 2014-2015 PNC Bank Concert Artist Series at the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values. The performance is set for 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Teasley brings together diverse world traditions of percussion and creates a one-of-a-kind audience experience. At the Nov. 23 concert, he will perform a number of traditional, improvisational and original works using instruments from the world over, and combining ancient percussion with digital technology.

As a cultural envoy, Teasley has traveled throughout the Middle East on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. He has toured extensively, performing at world music and percussion festivals across the U.S., Europe, South America, New Zealand and Samoa. Teasley is the recipient of three Fulbright-Hayes Awards for collaborating with indigenous master musicians and two Washington Area Music Awards for “Best World Music Instrumentalist.”

Beyond the concert arena, Teasley has performed with individual visual artists, such as performance artist Nick Cave, and with art galleries, including the Kreeger Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. He is a renowned theatrical composer, sound designer and performer — his work has earned him two Helen Hayes Awards. He has served as artist-in-residence at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Levine School of Music.

Teasley’s seven CDs have received international airplay and critical acclaim.

Doors open 30 minutes before the concert and seating is limited. Parking is available on campus, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.
