Career Specialties: Nalani Butler's specific area of expertise is in sport management and sport sociology.
Professional and Community Activities: Butler’s research in the discipline of sport studies includes: Globalization and Sport, Sport Labor Migration and Sport for Development. During her tenure at the University of Tennessee, Butler presented her work at various national and international conferences including: The North American Society for Sociology of Sport (NASSS), The North American Association for Sport Management (NASSM) and the Fourth International Conference on Sport and Society. Also, in the past year, Butler has had two first author publications in the
Journal of Leisure Studies
Journal of Policy Research in Tourism and Leisure Events
During her time at the University of Tennessee, Butler volunteered her time with the Korean Foundation for Next Generation in Sports Talent Program (NEST) and also volunteered as a graduate student representative for the Center of Sport, Peace, and Society (CSPS). Her time volunteering was spent facilitating communication between people from different cultures by using sport as a tool to connect those from diverse backgrounds.
Butler feels that service is an essential part of the learning experience and incorporates experiential service learning in her courses. During her tenure as a graduate teaching associate, Butler connected with various community partners in the Knoxville, TN, area. She created a service-learning class in which students had the opportunity to volunteer their time with organizations like the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club. Students were able to help these nonprofit organizations with health and wellness programs, physical fitness programs and mentorship programs.
