Lead Counsel for Campaign Finance Supreme Court Case to Speak at UT April 28

Dan Backer, an attorney who successfully challenged campaign finance restrictions in the recent controversial McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission (FEC) case, will speak at The University of Tampa on Monday, April 28, at 11:30 a.m. in Plant Hall’s Fletcher Lounge.

McCutcheon v. FEC, which Time magazine stated will “usher in a new era in political spending,” affirms that individuals can now spend in aggregate an unlimited amount of money on political parties and campaigns.

Backer, founder and principal attorney for DB Capitol Strategies, a premiere campaign finance and political law firm based in Alexandria, VA, was Shaun McCutcheon’s lead counsel in the case and played a major role in encouraging McCutcheon to file suit against the FEC. The case was argued before the Supreme Court on Oct. 8, 2013, and decided for McCutcheon on April 2, 2014.

A self-described staunch defender and advocate at the forefront of free speech and associational rights, Backer will discuss the court process, decision and its impact on future elections.
