Human Rights Expert David Hawk to Speak at UT Honors Symposium Oct. 22

On Thursday, Oct. 22, The University of Tampa will welcome prominent human rights researcher and advocate David Hawk, who will present When the United Nations Works to Promote and Protect Human Rights. The event, part of the University’s Honors Program symposia series, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values and is free and open to the public.

Over several decades of high-level involvement in the field of international human rights, Hawk has acquired expertise in the documentation and analysis of worst-case violations, the UN human rights system, human rights provisions in conflict resolution, non-governmental human rights advocacy, human rights organization and agency management, and human rights education and training.

Hawk is a former executive director of Amnesty International USA and a former United Nations human rights official in charge of the Cambodia Office of the UN high commissioner for human rights. He has written numerous reports on human rights issues, most notably on the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia in the 1980s, the genocidal massacres in Rwanda in the 1990s and, most recently, on human rights violations in North Korea. From 2011–2013, he was a visiting scholar at the Columbia University Institute for the Study of Human Rights. He currently teaches at Hunter College, City University of New York.

The event is co-sponsored by the United Nations Association of Tampa Bay, the UN Student Alliance at the University of South Florida and the UT Honors Program.
