Two Celebrated Hispanic Scientists to Make Presentations and be Recognized at UT Oct. 23

Two outstanding, award-winning scientists will visit The University of Tampa to give brief inspirational talks about their science and life experiences as part of the annual Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) National Hispanic Scientist of the Year (NHSOY) event.

The scientists are Miguel Morales-Silva, physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and Modesto Maidique, president emeritus at Florida International University. Maidique was named 2015 MOSI National Hispanic Scientist of the Year, and Morales-Silva was named 2015 MOSI Early Career National Hispanic Scientist of the Year.

The pair will make presentations on Friday, Oct. 23, in the Vaughn Center ninth floor on the UT campus, starting at 5:15 p.m. Maidique will speak on “From Havana to Harvard,” and Moreales-Silva will speak on "Materials at Extreme Conditions: From Ignition to Planetary Interiors."

The scientists will also meet with students, faculty and guests. Forty Hillsborough High School science students and their teachers will attend as well.

The presentations are free and open to the public.
