Florida Teacher Certification Exam Preparation
Students must take and pass all portions of the General Knowledge Exam as part of their application process for being admitted into the undergraduate education program. Students must complete the remaining two tests, the Subject Area Exam and the Professional Exam, prior to graduating. Students can register for all Florida Teacher Preparation Exams (FTCE) such as the General Knowledge Exam, Subject Area Exam and Professional Education Exam on the Pearson Education website.
Additionally, The University of Tampa provides test preparation workshops to help Florida teachers who must submit to Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) and pass the General Knowledge Test (GKT), which consists of four subtests covering essay, English language skills, mathematics and reading. These test preparation workshops are for students who may currently be in a college or university education program, teachers with provisional certification and persons who wish to make a career change to public school teaching, whether currently in Florida or from another state.
The University of Tampa’s FTCE test prep workshop provides participants with tips, tools and practice to help test-takers prepare effectively for the examination. Samples of test content are used and effective strategies for test-taking are covered. Participants become familiar with the format of the exam and how it is scored. Florida Department of Education guidelines and recommendations are incorporated throughout. The courses are led by instructors with expertise in the areas covered by the exam and familiar with the exam and question types. Material covered is designed to offer a refresher on material covered in the subtests, provide practice examples and generally reduce test-taking anxiety.
The workshop courses are held over two sequential Saturdays and cover material for all four subtests.
- The first of the two Saturdays starts at 9 a.m. and concludes at 4:30 p.m. A brief lunch break is provided (cost of lunch not included in price). Since the break is short, it is recommended participants bring lunch. This session includes both math and writing/reading subtests review material.
- The following Saturday session starts at 9 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. This session includes only math subtests review material.
Both sessions integrate tips and practices designed to improve test-taking skills.
